Maurice Wilkey
‘Music is my refuge. I can crawl into the space between the
notes and curl my back to focus on life.’ – A quote
in adapted and inspired by Maya Angelou.
Soulful groove mixologist Maurice Wilkey a.k.a. 'Mojavi', pronounced
(mõ-hä´vee), has been motivated and nurtured by
music from an early age. Gospel and Soul music inspired roots have
been a long part of his development. His uncle, a surrogate father
to him, was a 30+ year church organist. His own personal musical
instruction in piano, drums and guitar has also played a great role
as well.
When not dropping rhythms at nightclubs, Maurice has fed his other
passion Radio Broadcasting. For 2 years at Emerson College’s
WERS (88.9 at night) onto Boston’s Urban Contemporary radio
station WILD 1995 to 2001, and finally Top 40 Oldies station WODS-FM
from 2001 to present, Maurice has made it a point to enrich his
life with diverse musical background.
From the time his ears ingested those first late 70's & early
80's Chicago House and N.Y. Progressive tracks, Maurice has been
hooked on the movement of music labeled by some as 'HOUSE'. Other
music forms i.e. Salsa, Reggae, World Beat, Afro Pop, Jazz, and
Blues have been and always will be incorporated into the gumbo of
his table setting dance floor moving set. A member in good standing
with the Boston House Music Coalition, Maurice has mixed musical
sets at Boston’s Soul Revival, Milky Way Lounge and most recently
at Utopia, in Downtown Boston. ‘Music was my refuge. I could
crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.’
– A quote in adapted and inspired by Maya Angelou.
